All About Pregnancy Ultrasounds
At our Utah ultrasound studio, we have gathered an amazing team and the latest technology so that you can see the little one in the womb. Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves that are above the range of human hearing. Ultrasound can be used to examine patients, study the interior of wood, or see things underground. But despite its multiple uses, the most common way it is used is for pregnancy ultrasounds.
Pregnancy ultrasounds use a transducer wand that is placed on the mother’s abdomen. This transducer sends out the ultrasound waves, which bounce back more as the material it’s passing through gets more dense. These waves are then picked up by the transducer and interpreted as an image by the onboard computer. Transducer gel is used in order to create an airproof medium between the mother’s abdomen and the transducer, because the waves ultrasounds use are easily disrupted by air.
Ultrasounds Vs. Sonograms
One of the most common questions we get is about the difference between ultrasounds and sonograms. Often these terms are used interchangeably, and we have many people who find us by searching for 3D sonograms or 4D sonograms.
There is a technical difference, but it’s really semantics. Ultrasonography is the process of using waves in order to create an image, and the actual image is the sonogram. In short: ultrasound = procedure, sonogram = picture.
Are Baby Ultrasounds Safe?
When you’re dealing with the life of a baby in the womb, you always want to make sure that every action you take is as safe as possible. We’re happy to let you know that ultrasounds are the safest form of medical imaging out there and that no negative effects have ever been shown.
The primary reason that ultrasound is so safe is that the method uses no ionizing radiation, so there is no chance of the ultrasound waves affecting cells in the way that x-rays can. The ultrasound equipment at our clinic is using the same technology as you’ll find in a hospital. To further put your mind at ease, please know that we follow the FDA’s standards for all ultrasound procedures. Trust us, we couldn’t (and wouldn’t) offer any service that’s not safe for unborn children.
3D ultrasounds are our most popular option, largely because they’re so easy to share with friends and family!
3D ultrasounds give an excellent image of the baby in the womb, providing an in-utero portrait. These are high-definition images that truly give you a wonderful view of your child. You will be able to see all of the baby’s features and start arguing about who they look more like, the mother or the father!
When is the best time to have a 3D ultrasound? Part of it is the parents’ preference. Some parents want to see the baby as a whole, and the best time to do that is between 16 and 26 weeks. If you’re more interested in getting images of the baby’s face, between 28 and 32 weeks is the best time because the baby is putting on fat and the facial features are becoming more defined. After 32 weeks it starts getting harder because the baby is running out of room, but if you’re more than 32 weeks along then we’d love the challenge of taking your little one’s first portraits!
4D ultrasounds use the exact same technology as 3D ultrasounds, but the additional D is for the dimension of time. That’s because 4D ultrasounds are videos, and you’ll be able to see your baby from different angles and post the images wherever you want.
For decades, 2-dimensional ultrasounds were the best that medical science had to offer. These are the black and white images that most people think of when pregnancy ultrasounds are mentioned.
Despite the images being lower definition, there’s still something special about these kinds of images. Some people like the nostalgic look of these images, or they are curious to compare the profile of their baby to the mother’s own ultrasound from decades ago.
During a 2D ultrasound, you’ll be able to see your baby moving in real time and go home with printouts and digital images. You can also make this part of a gender ultrasound package. Because this form of ultrasound is less expensive, you might choose to get these ultrasounds at multiple stages throughout the pregnancy to see your baby’s development.
Gender Blood Test
Gender blood tests are the earliest way to determine whether you should be expecting a boy or a girl. You can find out as early as nine weeks into the pregnancy, much earlier and more accurately than ultrasounds at that stage of development.
The process is complex, but the concept is rather simple to understand. As you might remember from high school science courses, women have XX chromosomes and men have XY chromosomes. Since the mother is circulating blood with the child, the mother’s blood can be tested for these chromosomes. Since the mother has only XX chromosomes, the presence of any XY chromosomes means that the child is a boy. If only XX chromosomes are found, then the child is a girl. It’s that simple!
Not everyone is searching for “3D ultrasounds near me” when they head to Google. No, some are simply more interested in getting a quick scan of their baby in order to find out if they’re having a boy or a girl. We’re here to help, delivering the best ultrasounds in Utah that can quickly and effectively tell you what gender your child is. Not only that, but you’ll also get traditional 2D black and white photos and digital images to take with you. Gender ultrasounds work best after the 16th week of pregnancy.
Why Should You Find Out?
For most of human history, there was no way to tell whether or not someone was going to have a boy or a girl. While there were many old wive’s tales that could supposedly tell what gender the child would be (the woman is carrying low, her arms are hairy), none of these were reliable ways of finding out if a boy or a girl was on his or her way.
Being surprised might be a long-standing part of being human, but it’s certainly not something that we need to hold onto in this day and age! There are far too many advantages of knowing if what gender of child to expect, such as:
- How To Prepare The Nursery – There are so many theories when it comes to painting the nursery. Some schools of thought suggest that it should be in blacks, whites, and grays. Others suggest gender-neutral colors. And while there’s no right or wrong answer, some parents want to go with the (surprisingly recent) pink for girls and blue for boys. If that’s you, then knowing your baby’s gender allows you to paint the room weeks or months in advance so that the paint smell can dissipate before the child arrives.
- The Kinds of Gifts You Get – When you know the gender of your baby, it’s win-win in the gifts department. First of all, you’re making it easier for people to shop for you. Second, you’re making sure that you are getting clothing that you don’t have to return. Trust us, you’ll have enough to do once the baby gets here without wondering where the gift receipts are!
- The Mental Calm – Some parents, especially first-time parents, want to know the gender of their child so that they can mentally prepare. If the father grew up in a houseful of boys, the prospect of taking care of a girl might take some getting used to. It’s simply nice to be mentally prepared for the child to come.
- Remember, It’s a Surprise Either Way – “But I want to be surprised!” many people will say when it comes to gender identification. Well, if you’re completely honest with yourself, you’ll realize that you’re going to be surprised no matter when you find out. It’s going to be a surprise whether you’re in the emergency room or in our baby ultrasound studio. In the end, you get to choose when you’ll be surprised: surrounded by doctors and nurses that you’ll probably never see again tomorrow, or surrounded by the select group of people who are most important to you.
BUT WAIT! Just to be clear, you don’t have to find out if your child will be a boy or a girl! The 3D and 4D ultrasounds we take are most often of the child’s face, and while parents might think they can tell the difference if it’s a boy or a girl from just the face, they really can’t! As long as you listen to us when we say “you should probably turn away now if you don’t want to know,” you can get the pregnancy ultrasound portraits you want without spoiling the surprise.
What People Do With Their Baby Scans
What are people doing with their 3D and 4D ultrasound images? Just about everything you can imagine! Let’s take a look at a few of the most common ways that people display them.
When people walk into our ultrasound studio, their primary intention is usually to frame their pictures. Maybe they have the frame all picked out, or they plan to stop by the store soon to find one that perfectly matches. These often make their way into the living room, onto a desk, or even as part of the baby’s nursery.
Give Them As Gifts!
We don’t have to tell you that new parents get excited about the imminent arrival of their little ones, but the only people who might be more excited are the grandparents! After all, grandparents get the excitement of the grandchild without having to go through that pesky labor, and they get to buy baby toys without having to find a place to store them.
So what do the excited parents give the equally excited grandparents for a gift? Framed 3D sonograms of the baby, of course! It’s a wonderful way to experience the baby together before they are actually born.
Put Them Everywhere!
After getting the images from our ultrasound studio in electronic form, something dawns on many of our customers: “I have these digital photos…everyone I meet will see them whether they like it or not!” These pictures then show up on their phone, on their Facebook feed, on Instagram, and as backgrounds on their computers (work and home). While these images might not have a fancy frame around them, they certainly end up being the most common way that people see them.
What can you with the 4D ultrasound videos if you choose that route? Pretty much the same thing! 4D baby scans are like videos, so they can also be shown on phones or posted on Facebook. Instagram even allows 60-second videos, so many people put them up there.
